The Mandarinfish, or Mandarin Dragonet. This picture is the first of a series I'm going to do courtesy of Lucy Harrison, a PhD candidate here at SFU who gets to do field work in Saipan. I am very jealous. If I get her permission, I'll post some of her non-fish pictures.These guys are frickin' crazy. The evolutionary geneticist in me (he's rather large and insistent) keeps asking many questions every time I look at these pics. How much variation is there in colour patterns within this species? How many populations are there? Do they show sexual dimorphism? Mostly, just, WTF? Highly cool.
