Friday Fish: Geotria australis

The southern Pouched lamprey, our first foray into the jawless fishes. There are not many pictures on the web of this genus; this was the largest I could find. Fishbase.org has another picture that I don't like as much for purely aesthetic reasons, but I'll include it anyway:

These things scare the bejeebus outta me. Did you know lake Ontario has lampreys? Some of them make it up the river systems as far as Guelph!

Yes, I did, though I'm a little surprised to hear they might be in the Speed river in Guelph. Still, the lack of real barriers (that I know of) between the lake and here makes this quite plausible.

I think the Lake Ontario lampreys are an invasive species, but I'm not sure about that.

I guess you're not a big fan of leeches, either.
