Blog Highlights

I haven't figured out what I'm going to do with my desktop computer at home - it's big and heavy and about five years old, but I have accumulated a great deal of digital crapola on its multiple (small) harddrives. One thing I can do now, in case I decide to wipe-and-sell (or wipe-and-donate) it, is to pull a few of the links out of my "favourites" bin on this computer; links which I do not have at my fingertips on my laptop computer (which is not going to be separated from me any time soon, I hope).

Northstate Science - another bloggin' professor, this time in California, and an Archaeologist. Note that cretinists hate scientific archaeology as much as they hate other sciences like biology and geology.

Tetrapod Zoology - Darren Naish is not yet a professor - he completed his PhD in paleontology not long ago. His blog is, as far as I can tell, 100% long posts, no (or very little) personal stuff. Each post is like a mini-review paper on some aspect of Sarcopterigian fishes and their descendents - ie, tetrapods, vertebrates with four limbs. This includes Dinosaurs and other extinct charismatic megafauna.

The Physics of Sex - A rarely-updated newish blog describing, in glorious detail, the physical side of copulation in Homo sapiens. Fun reads, with some interesting ideas.

Nascent - the journal Nature has decided to sponsor some blogs. Nothing too exciting (to me, at least) is up and running yet, but if they decide to compete (or complement) Seed magazine's excellent ScienceBlogs, the scientifically-literate blogosphere could be in for some upgrades. A British spin on science and culture would be welcome - either from Nature or Seed.

Non-blogs

Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About - funny. Very funny. Read, procrastinate, enjoy. Sooner or later I'll by his books.

Tom Scott - He's filed under "Weirdos on the 'net" which is a bit redundant. I highly recommend the semaphore ninja.

Uncyclopedia - Today's featured article is "Holocaust Tycoon". I am both highly amused and deeply ashamed.

Hmm, that "thing my girlfriend and I have argued about" seems strikingly familiar, for some unexplained reason ;-)
